The Holyoke Youth Conservation Corps (HYCC) is a work and educational experience for Holyoke youth during the summer focusing on the care and management of natural areas the development of cooperation and leadership skills and education about the natural and cultural resources of Holyoke and the surrounding area. This year the Corp will have a strong focus on developing appreciation for conservation values through a weekly structure that includes: stewardship work in and around Holyoke; instructional periods led by the HYCC supervisor Regional Educator and other staff; Corp members serving as mentors/instructors in-turn to younger local youth with en educational experience they help design; and then reflection and team building. Compensation: $paid and workers compensation Qualifications: 1.Must be able to work independently and unsupervised. 2. Must have excellent “people skills” and have strong experience working successfully with teenage youth in an outdoor environment. 3.Must be able to handle the physical demands of the job which is carried out outside in a variety of weather conditions. 4.Must be flexible and able to undertake a variety of tasks. 5.Leadership experience is desired and candidate should be able to show success in working with and building a team. A track-record of maintaining group discipline and serving as a positive role model is desirable. 6.Background in environmental studies or education is preferable. 7.Familiarity with Holyoke is preferable. 8.Candidate should have or be willing and able to achieve basic first aid and CPR certification by the time the program begins.9.Must have a clear driving record and a valid Massachusetts’ driver’s license. 10.Fluency in conversation Spanish is preferred.11.Experience working in an agricultural setting landscape maintenance and/or in natural resource management preferred.
